A study of colonial society during the Bourbon regime based on the socioeconomic relationships established within the religious institution. Concentrating on the archdiocese of Mexico and the diocese of Guadalajara, the author shows us the Church as the intermediate point between the community and the divine. The activity in the buildings for religious practice was not limited to the adoration of the saints: the churches were also the meeting point of a multiracial society where public demonstrations took place and the place where priests, parishioners and colonial government determined from the political changes to the modifications carried out in these buildings resulting in the eclectic style acquired over time.
