The book "Contentious Republicans: popular politcs, race and Class in Nineteenth-Century Colombia" challenges the traditional view that 19th-century Colombian politics was merely a series of meaningless wars between elite factions of Liberals and Conservatives. The author argues that popular sectors (Indigenous people, Afro-Colombians, and poor mestizo farmers) were not just "cannon fodder" for the elite, but active political thinkers who shaped the nation.
