"La Ley de la Calle" invites the reader to think historically about the relationship between police and society in Mexico City by means of a tour of the institutions, spaces, subjects and their practices from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. By investigating these aspects, the social face of the subjects who made up the police is drawn and their practices are examined. From this perspective, police officers played a leading role in the creation of street laws, understood as a set of arrangements in the discretionary application of legal orders. This binomial law of the street includes daily negotiations between agents and the urban population. In other words, politics linked formal regulations as well as unforeseen or frankly illegal decisions.
