One of the problems that most arouses the interest of scholars of the indigenous past in Mexico is the question of Tula and the Toltecs. The present work addresses this question from the perspective of the history of historiography. For this purpose, a representative and significant sample of the various ways of approaching the Toltec problem over four centuries is established and analyzed. In an approach to the different currents of interpretation and to several selected authors, three basic questions have been raised: How is the nature of the sources and historiography of indigenous tradition and the value of their content for knowledge of the indigenous past conceived? What is Tula for different authors? And what relationship exists between the Toltec past and the Mexica? These questions guide the investigation.
