Mauricio Hochschild was a mining businessman of German Jewish origin and one of the wealthiest men of his time in America. His headquarters were in Chile, the source of his wealth in Bolivia, and he opened offices in Peru and Argentina, whose nationality he adopted after losing his German one in 1933 to Nazism. Thanks to him, who moved resources and his political influence, about twenty thousand Jews from Germany, Austria and Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Italy arrived in Bolivia since the late thirties.

Through a series of newly discovered documents, multiple interviews, and painstaking research, the authors—prominent journalists—have been able to reconstruct not only Hochschild's efforts to save as many Jews as possible, but also examine his enormous skills, the criticism he had to face, the allegations that he was an exploiter, the mortal danger he endured due to the volatile and revolutionary times in Bolivia, and not least, his extraordinary and complex love and family life.
