Translation by Jaime Urrutia and Adriana Urrutia.
The text was originally submitted as a doctoral thesis at the University of Paris VII. It covers almost three centuries of history: from the installation of the city of Piura in its current location to the abolition of slavery and indigenous tribute in the mid-19th century. The reconstruction focuses on the haciendas that the Spanish founded between the 16th and 18th centuries, dedicated to producing goods as varied as cotton and soap. Based on an impressive archival work, Jakob Schlüpmann analyzes the agrarian evolution of the region, in an acute comparative reflection with other Latin American and southern regions of the country, which in past decades aroused similar studies.
