Human beings not only eat to feed ourselves, but because we like it and because this act unites people. In the city of Lima, as in few other societies in the world, Peruvians eat to be happy, to appease sorrows for to be with those we love, so that life is better. In other words, we eat with our hearts, and we Limeños love the idea of sharing with others in this way. In this book, based on eight years of sociological research, I explore how this love for ceviche or grilled chicken, for example.
It has a lot to do with our experiences in a society in crisis, in which racism and classism are common in the lives of Lima and Peruvians. Thus, our taste for food has its origin in the history of the last decades; in the fact that Peru is a country of migrants; in the trauma of the economic, political and social crises in the urban growth of Lima and in the way in which Peruvians have dealt with all this in their identities and their emotional lives.
