Calderón wrote his comedy "El postrer duel de España" in the 1650s or early 1660s, and published it in his Cuarta parte de comedias nuevas printed in Madrid in 1672. The comedy belongs to the genre of historical works. It is based on the last solemn duel that took place in Spain on December 29, 1522 in Valladolid, presided over by Emperor Carlos V, between two Aragonese knights: don Pedro Torrellas and don Jerónimo Ansa. The work revolves around a love story between Don Pedro and his beloved Violante and the interference of Don Jerónimo, which will cause the duel, which culminates with a happy ending typical of the Golden Comedy.
