The book deals with issues related to colonial mining from a social perspective, an angle that has not been discussed, and consists of six essays. The first is focused on the importance of the Hualgayoc mine, located in Cajamarca, where mining began in northern Peru, with clear changes, both in mining and in the social aspect.
The second essay shows the phenomenon related to the high rate of natural children of Hualgayoc or Chota, the result of unstable or extramarital relationships of the miners with local women.
The third related to the testamentary disposition and legacies of mining deposits. The fourth essay looks at the situation of the widows of the miners who were forced to take over the mining properties. The fifth investigation focuses on the mining mitas of Huancavelica and Potosí, and on the dispersion of the mitayos.
The sixth and last essay shows the events related to the mineral from Cerro de Pasco, during the War of Independence and after the arrival of San Martín and his liberating army.
