"Ordenanzas del Baratillo de México" are the parodic constitutions of a fictitious brotherhood: the Brothers of the Nail. This institution seeks to bring together, and organize through its statutes, all criminals who practice their trade in New Spain, who, according to the Ordinances themselves, are all those who have been born here, and some upstarts who soon adjust to their weaving and handling. It does not matter the gender, social status or ethnic origin: in one way or another all the "natives of this kingdom" collaborate and try to be rewarded with the illicit businesses that are practiced. And it is that “men are worth as much as they have”, says the author repeatedly, especially here, “where are the respective appraisals and estimates of the flow, without asking if it is good or badly acquired”.
