“Escafandra” is a novel that follows the life of Palomo, a young man who aspires to be a boxer, but instead works in a flea market selling fayuca. This young man has suffered many hardships in the past but was recently adopted by the family of Natalio, his best friend, and things are looking up. He works very hard to fulfill his dreams. He’s in love with Telma, his adopted sister, but the couple is careful to keep their relationship secret, largely because Doña Amelia, his adopted mother, would disapprove. Palomo thinks that if he saves enough to buy Doña Amelia’s golden-colored car, he’ll earn her respect. Throughout the story, Palomo and his friends travel the streets together in the car, listening to heavy rock, full of adrenaline and susceptible to the all the dangers of youth seeking to get ahead in search of a better life. Author César Gándara masterfully narrates the time and place in which they find themselves, capturing it as if it were a photograph, showing a Mexico that seems to move and change every day. This novel won an Honorable Mention for the Amado Nervo National Short Novel Award in 2020.
