Through the review of a large number of books printed during the XVI-XVIII centuries on both sides of the Atlantic, the relationship between the paratexts and the literary texts of the most important authors of New Spain is studied. The present study focuses, therefore, on the analysis of the literary paratexts that were part of the preliminary space of the printed book and that were structured around certain rhetorical resources and topics. The approval, the prologue, the dedication and the laudatory poems are seen in relation to the literary text that precedes –and to which they refer– as powerful generators of discourse, and allow us to understand the intricate relationship between the literate circles and the institutions that they held. power in New Spain.;.
