Commemorating the fourth centenary of the ascent of the patron saint of Madrid to the altars, in the volume Lope de Vega and the canonization of San Isidro, six essays are presented that address different aspects of such an outstanding historical and spiritual event. A group of scholars made up of Alfredo Alvar Ezquerra, María José del Río Barredo, Jesús Ponce Cárdenas, José Aragüés Aldaz, Antonio Sánchez Jiménez and Cécile Vincent-Cassy offers profound reflections on the history of the virtuous farmer, the laborious process of canonization, the figure of María de la Cabeza in the probanzas of Fray Domingo de Mendoza, the epideictic profile of some passages of the Isidro. Castilian Poem, Lope's hagiographic comedies, the configuration of sacred simplicity in relation to the christus motif of the Abecé and, finally, the isidril iconography displayed in engravings and paintings throughout the Baroque Age. The present volume investigates, then, in an exciting episode of the literature of the Golden Age, in a transcendental chapter of Hispanic spirituality and culture from a multidisciplinary perspective in which the paths of History, Philology and History of the Art.
