This book analyzes different ways of organization, composition and execution of carnival festivities in indigenous communities. In the multicultural context of the state of Oaxaca, various expressions of community organization and collective work make carnival festivities possible. With information from nine localities, similarities and differences between community carnivals are exposed here. At the same time that the current expressions are described, the transformations observed in the festive practices and the demands of respect for a cultural heritage are also rescued, from the mouths of the protagonists, invocations that constitute a desire to maintain the festival based on community conceptions of fun and protection of the meanings of life in community.
