This book brings together ten proposals, the product of the reflection of specialists in some part of the wide spectrum of religiosities and identities from the old regime to contemporary expressions, passing through the no less enigmatic nineteenth century. The first part deals with explaining the configuration of some devotions in New Spain, among them the Immaculate Carmelite, Santiago the Apostle, or a plethora of saints venerated in chapels and oratories in Mexico City. The chapters of the second part of the book focus their interest on the examination of how the popular sectors of New Spain and the 19th century experienced their religiosity, resorting to the veneration of certain images to mitigate their fears, shocks, passions or aversions, in an uncertain context caused by the fear of imminent death, unexpected portent, temporary evil, accidents, illnesses or the dangers of country life.
