Water resources are essential in the development of societies. Since ancient times, the human populations settled near the rivers, lakes, lagoons and seas of Veracruz have generated different strategies for managing and using aquatic environments and the resources that exist in them.

The Veracruz coast has been the scene of an extensive development of port infrastructure that has complexified and connected the particular histories of the different regions of the Gulf of Mexico. Veracruz, known as the first port of Mexico, is an example of the incessant activity of transformation and social development from the colonial period of New Spain to the present. However, the earliest history of the ports on the Veracruz coast has been limited to the period of Hispanic contact with the native peoples of Mesoamerica, so knowledge about navigation systems, technologies and port developments from pre-Hispanic times is reduced.

In this book, evidence is presented that allows a better understanding of the deep port history of Veracruz, whose antecedents extend to the original cultures of the Gulf Coast of Mexico. The documentation of the presence of ancient and extensive settlements with infrastructure for port activity on the coastal strip of the Center and South of the State is a joint effort between the Universidad Veracruzana and the Integral Port Administration of Veracruz in the social commitment to register, document and make visible the port archaeological heritage of the State of Veracruz.
