On August 6, 2014, the worst environmental disaster in the history of mining in Mexico occurred: due to an accident at the Buenavista del Cobre mine tailings dam, 40,000 m3 of acidified copper sulfate solution was spilled into the hydric system of the upper basin of the Sonora River, Mexico.

"Minería y Sociedad en el Río Sonora" seeks to systematize and disseminate in society a set of studies that have been developed from the analysis of the "Sonora River Spill" and its consequences. It is intended to propose perspectives, provide evidence and information for the critical and purposeful discussion of mining as the axis of territorial development in Sonora. Surely, the reader will find, in each of the chapters, arguments that encourage reflection, the design of strategies and the search for solutions to the problems of the complex network of relationships between mining and society.
