Abandoned infants, children of single mothers, and children whose parents were not married in the Church were all born into illegitimacy. But the way to write down the illegitimate in the parish registers and in the civil registry varied over time and also depended on the criteria of the priest or the judge in turn. This book Born Illegitimate. New Spain and Mexico, brings together fifteen studies on different places and times that show the evolution of illegitimacy from the seventeenth century to the twentieth century in New Spain and Mexico. Most are based on quantitative research, but the explanations provided do not arise only from the documentary series analyzed. It is also about learning more about the fate of children born illegitimately and identifying their parents, since in many cases they were not completely unknown. The African and mulatto slaves, the Indian captives of war and the orphans merged into that same group of infants who lacked the family shelter, because they did not grow up with their parents who often remained unknown, shared their fate with that of the illegitimate and their social status was comparable.
