This work analyzes the life of the Federal Republic of Central America, its problems and eventual dissolution, contextualizing the subsequent emergence of Guatemala. The study consists of three sections. The first, "The dream and the losses of the great country", details the historiographical discussion, the collapse of the federation and the problems of dispersion of the elite to face the situation, as well as the efforts -and difficulties- to build a state autonomous in Guatemala in the sequel to the federation. The second, “Localism is Imposed,” examines the reorganization of Guatemalan politics and government from 1840 to 1846, in an attempt to achieve governability in the country in the face of widespread localist resistance.
