Red Star (1908) is a delusional utopian fantasy in which a trip to Mars becomes an allegory about the creation of a Soviet state. Packed with mechanical devices such as the videophone, flying gondolas, and of course interplanetary travel, the novel predates the automation of production and even atomic fusion. Following in the wake of the classic science fiction novels of the beginning of the century, Red Star does not disdain the best Jules Verne and is, as in the case of the French writer, a wonderful example of the literary phenomenon recently baptized as "proto-steampunk"
