The book is preceded by the doctoral thesis defended by the author at the Center for Historical Studies of the Colegio de México, in 2000. It constitutes an important contribution to the analysis of the role played by tobacco in the articulation of the Spanish empire, after the reforms Bourbon from the 18th century. It is an essential contribution to understand the dynamics of imperial governance, prior to its crisis, and the role played by the cultivation of tobacco leaves in the implementation of commercial agriculture in Cuba.
