It is impossible to reconstitute the period of the conquest and the first forty years of the Castilian colonization in Chile without referring to the system of entrustment of personal service implemented. In spite of the relevance that the encomienda had, there is little that is known of it beyond its institutional apparatus and the legislation that during the second half of the 16th century regulated its development. This study intends to fill this void, trying to reconstitute historical processes from a broad perspective, including both the perspective of the representatives of the crown and the encomenderos, as well as that of the tributaries, their women, and their chieftains.
