"Construcción racial y de género" is a critical study on the poetry of three Cuban black authors -- Georgina Herrera, Excilia Saldaña, and Soleida Ríos -- particularly examining their often contradictory positions on race and gender during the first three decades of the Cuban Revolution. Author Lídice Alemán also highlights the fact that the state only supported and disseminated poetry that was not contrary to the revolution, did not have a feminist agenda, and did not promote the formation or strengthening of black identities.
