"Son de almendra" is a novel that takes place in New York during the year 1957. Albert Anastasia, head of the mafia, has just been murdered and war over the control of Havana casinos is brewing. Joaquín, a young journalist, decides to investigate connections between important Cuban figures and the under world of crime. The same day Anastasia is killed, a hippopotamus is also killed. Joaquín realizes that both deaths may be connected, which leads him to a zoo caretaker who apparently holds the key to a deadly conspiracy. At the same time, he falls in love with a woman from a circus who reveals a world full of fabricated possibilities. This thriller explores the space between memory and nostalgia. Written by Mayra Montero, who is also the author of “La trenza de la hermosa luna” (1987), “La última noche que pasé contigo” (1991) and “Púrpura profundo” (Premio La Sonrisa Vertical, 2000).
